Sometimes we come across unique projects we haven’t seen before. Like this one. And we love such opportunities.
X-Ray Audio is the brainchild of two London-based creatives, musician Stephen Coates, and photographer, Paul Heartfield. During a trip to Russia with his band a few years ago Coates discovered plenty of old records with Russian and Western music, records created using old X-ray films.
Curious to discover more, Coates and Heartfield applied for an Arts England grant and then travelled back to Russia to meet the surviving bootleggers, document their stories and preserve what remains of this once-thriving underground business.
Together they put together an exhibition and are currently working on a book and a short documentary.
